Status update is an update on a single incident report.
When an incident happens the best practice is to create a status page report stating that a specific service is Degraded or that there is Downtime. Once the incident is resolved a status update should be added to the current status report stating that the incident is now resolved.
To add a new status update to your status page:
  • Go to Status pages
  • Pick the status page you add the report to
  • Click Configure in the headline
  • Go to Reports tab
  • Click Manage updates
  • Click Create status update
  • Write what is new with the inciednt in the message text field
  • Select which monitor is affected by the incident and select the current situation from the dropdown
  • Click Create update
Example
Let's say one of the monitored websites went down completely. What happens is that the monitor on the status page turns red and shows there is downtime. To give users more insight we will create a new report called Homepage is unavailable and select homepage monitor from not affected to Downtime. We can also provide a brief description of the incident "example.com website is down for all users". Then we start investigating and once we have an update, for example, we see that our cloud provider is having problems we can create a status update with this information.

When the cloud provider fixes the issue and the homepage comes back up, we can create a new status update switching the affected services dropdown to Resolved.
